Developing Sustainable and Unique Uniforms for Sudima Kaikoura: A Case Study by Henry & Gray

Sudima Kaikoura reached Henry & Gray to help them develop ideas for a new uniform solution for all staff and departments.

The Client 

Sudima Kaikoura is found in the coastal city of Kaikoura in New Zealand. The hotel offers a range of lodging choices, such as rooms and suites. It is well-known for its spectacular views of the mountains and water in the area. With a wide range of services like a restaurant, bar, conference space, and spa, the hotel is dedicated to providing outstanding service and hospitality to visitors. 

Additionally, the hotel has started several initiatives to decrease its influence on the environment since it is devoted to conservation and environmental responsibility. 

The Brief 

As this was a newly established hotel, we were tasked with creating an entirely new uniform design for all staff across different departments.

The client had expressed a need for a consistent and identifiable solution to distinguish their hotel as one of the Sudima Hotels. In addition, they had specific requirements that were exclusive to this particular hotel setting and distinct from their other city hotels.

These requirements involved incorporating warmth layers into the uniform. Additionally, consistent with their sustainability values, the client requested that we prioritise using organic and environmentally-friendly materials wherever possible, as with all of their hotels. 

The Solution 

The project presented us with the challenge of finding a jacket that would maintain a professional appearance while being less formal than the blazers used in the city hotels. After exploring various possibilities in collaboration with the client, we eventually settled on the Chore Jacket as the ideal solution to achieve the desired look. 

Another challenge was incorporating a warmth layer into the uniform without compromising aesthetics. To tackle this issue, we proposed a white thermal top to be worn underneath the white t-shirt, which not only provided warmth but also seamlessly blended in with the overall design of the uniform, meeting the client's requirements.

The Outcome 

 

Our team dedicated several weeks to meticulously reviewing and refining design boards and incorporating feedback from the client. We also ensured that physical samples were created to guarantee that the final product would meet our standards of excellence.

Through our efforts, we successfully developed a range of uniforms that achieved a unique look specific to Kaikoura while still maintaining the overarching Sudima look and feel present in their other hotels. 

As a result, we are proud to have delivered a final product that met and exceeded the client's expectations.
